A Heartfelt Gathering: Recovery Day 2024

On October 11th, 2024, the Recovery Devon community gathered for a special day of reflection, connection, and celebration at the Exeter Library. It was a day filled with inspiring stories, creative expression, and moments of genuine connection, proving once again the power of community in the journey of recovery.

The day began with the Recovery Devon team arriving early to set up, ensuring that the space was welcoming and ready for the event. As the doors opened at 10:30, guests began to trickle in, greeted with warmth and the promise of a day dedicated to shared experiences and growth.

It wasn’t long before the room was buzzing with anticipation as the opening words set the tone for the day. There was an immediate sense of belonging among attendees, many of whom were regular faces in the community. This was followed by a session led by Si, one of this years recipients of funding from the Community Development Fund, who spoke passionately about recovery and shared insights through creative writing. His reflections were a reminder of the resilience within each of us and the power of storytelling in the healing process. Si led us in a creative writing activity that got everyone involved, sparking connections and inspiring heartfelt exchanges among the group.

We then listened to an inspiring talk from Irene from WCW, who shared the story of how their group came to be after the closure of the DLRC. Recognizing how vital the space had been for many, they were determined not to let that sense of community and support fade away. With immense dedication and passion, WCW worked tirelessly to protect and continue the safe haven that so many relied on. Their journey was a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of preserving spaces where people can come together, find support, and continue their recovery journeys.

We were then introduced to Roo, our new Community Development Worker, who was delivering an inspiring talk about their project ‘Roosland’ that was funded by this years Community Development Fund. Using slides and pictures, Roo highlighted the profound impact that the land and natural surroundings can have on our well-being, offering a space where people can feel grounded and connected, both with nature and with each other. The presentation emphasized how these natural spaces provide a vital refuge for recovery, fostering a sense of peace and community that is essential for healing and growth.

As we look ahead, the connections made and the stories shared on this Recovery Day will continue to inspire us. It is through gatherings like this that we build the strength and resilience of our community. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at Exeter Library, your presence and participation made the day truly special. A special thanks to those that shared their projects and recovery experiences with us, Exeter Library for hosting and St Sidwell’s Bakehouse for the incredible cakes and cookies!
