What is STR?

A Support Time and Recovery Worker (STR) is someone who works as part of a team that provides mental health services and focuses directly on the needs of service users. They may work across traditional boundaries of care, organisation and role. They will provide Support, give Time to the service user and help promote their Recovery. Recovery values are based on the individual defining their recovery in their own terms and as far as possible self managing their recovery process. The worker is there to help people define and achieve their recovery objectives. They pay attention to the wishes and aspirations of service users to recover or discover the life they wish to lead.

How can I become an STR?

To become an STR worker, you need to attend a 3 day Support Time and Recovery worker Foundation Course. The course is organised and run by Laurie Davidson, (the STR lead for Devon,) on behalf of the Modernisation Agency (an executive department of the Department of Health). Day one of the course covers an Introduction, stories from service users and carers, the role, recovery theory and practice. Day two is the Wellness Recovery Action Plan for Supporters and Day three Human Givens, the Ten Essential Shared Capabilities, Development, Further training opportunities and future plans. The course is fully interactive with lots of opportunities to discuss, share and discover the role. For more information, please contact Laurie Davidson via email: laurie.davidson@btopenworld.com or post to: Laurie Davidson c/o Devon Partnership NHS Trust, Wonford House, Dryden Road, Exeter, EX2 5AF.

How can I get an STR worker?

In order to get an STR worker, you need to be referred to the secondary services provided by the Devon Partnership NHS Trust and allocated a care coordinator under the Care Programme Approach. The care coordinator can then arrange for you to be assessed for an STR worker to be assigned to help you in your recovery.
