A list of references, articles, web addresses, podcasts, research materials, touchstones, tools and books has been created by Glen Roberts. All the items share a common thread of being about recovery in some way. The purpose of this list is to make it easy for anyone interested in looking into recovery and the associated issues to easily access the available literature. It hasn’t been gathered through any systematic fashion so much as drawn together over time on personal recommendation from people who have read or used these references and valued them. The headings used are not from any other system either – they just seem to make sense. • DREEM - DREEM - A User’s Guide for the Developing Recovery Enhancing Environments Measure
  • What is the DREEM? The Recovery Enhancing Environment Measure (REE) is a self-report instrument that gathers information/data about mental health recovery from people who receive mental health services. The REE asks people where they are in their process of mental health recovery, and what markers of recovery they are currently experiencing. People rate the importance of several elements (such as hope, sense of meaning, and wellness) to their personal recovery, and rate the performance of their mental health service on three activities associated with each of these elements. They also rate the service on factors in the system that promote resilience. Open-ended questions encourage people to share the wisdom they have gained on their recovery journey, and to say how they think staff and systems could be more supportive of their recovery.

• DREEM @ Russell Clinic - Background and Aim: The recovery movement in mental health has a long history but has gained increasing prominence over recent years. In mid-2005 the National Institute of Mental Health for England (NIMHE), who had previously expressed a commitment to the recovery principles, communicated an interest in piloting a tool designed to measure how ‘recovery based’ a mental health environment and service is. A local service user group expressed an interest in being involved in the implementation of such a tool. Parallel to this the Exeter Rehabilitation and Recovery service were looking to perform a service evaluation that could be used as a focus for Staff and Service Development. From this came a decision to utilise the Developing Recovery Enhancing Environments Measure (DREEM) on Russell Clinic (the in patient component of the service at Wonford House Hospital, Exeter).
• WRAP @ Russell Clinic - Background: Over the last couple of years we have been gradually developing ways of using WRAP and self-management ideas to support the people we work with in being able to more effectively look after themselves. One of the strengths of recovery-based work is that the same principles of wellness apply to staff and patients alike. We acknowledge that in order for a team to do well it needs to be well, and that attending to the health and wellbeing of the team is an investment in our ability to offer a recovery service – ‘you cannot give it if you haven’t got it’. In October 2006, during our annual staff and service development days, we worked together to think what a WRAP plan would look like for Russell Clinic. Nearly all the staff working on RC contributed ideas and suggestions. A draft copy was circulated in
  October / November and staff’s comments incorporated into this final version.

  • The Effectiveness of Service User-Run or Service User-Led Mental Health Services for People with Mental Illness - "this report is to systematically identify and appraise the international evidence for the effectiveness of service user-run or service user-led mental health services for people with mental disorders. A service user-run, service user-led service is defined as a programme, project, or service planned, administered, delivered, and evaluated by a service user group based on needs defined by the service user group. Operation of the service requires self-governance by service users themselves, service user staffing and supervision of this staff, service user control of programme policy, and service user responsibility for programme implementation. This report seeks to highlight the potential for investment in, and future evaluation of, service user-run initiatives and services within the mental health sector."
  • “Kia Mauri Tau!” - Narratives of Recovery from Disabling Mental Health Problems - "A project in the area of ‘pathways to wellness’. They interviewed 40 people who defined themselves as recovered, about their lives before, during and after their experience of mental health problems. To my knowledge this was the first New Zealand based research on people’s recovery experiences funded by a government agency.
    Hilary Lapsley, Linda Waimarie Nikora and Rose Black presented the preliminary findings of their research to the Mental Health Commission in 2000. Their findings on people’s experiences of mental health problems amply reflected my own experience and knowledge. But it was their findings on people’s recovery experiences that really riveted me. Their descriptions of the themes of recovery, and of the barriers to recovery, did more than echo my own experiences; it confirmed my belief that they were shared by many and diverse others in loosely predictable ways. The Mental Health Commission has decided to publish Kia Mauri Tau! because we want the whole sector to benefit from this groundbreaking research. You hold in your hands one of the best thematic accounts of mental health problems and recovery I have ever seen. It is accessible and easy to read. It is a bicultural project based in New Zealand, when most recovery literature is written by white people from other countries. It honours the experience of the people who told their stories by taking them at their word. And its findings shed new light on the tempestuous and triumphant journeys of many thousands of New Zealanders.
